Social Media for Social Change: One Night — HUGE RETURNS!

February 23, 2009 – 7:38 pm by Meg Fowler

Block out March 7th on your calendar.

And not because I expect you to go anywhere or do anything.

In fact — I want you to stay home.

Imagine it right now:

  • No need to dress up. PJs are PERFECT.
  • No need to spend hours trying to think of something to do with your friends/spouse/recent Craigslist “friend”
  • No need to put on heels or iron a shirt or GROOM IN ANY WAY
  • No need to get a sitter
  • No need to leave your dog/cat/bird/fish at home
  • No need to get crazy reservations and STILL wait in line for an hour because they’re backed up
  • No need to stand at the bar and pretend you’re waiting for someone
  • No need to pick something off the menu that fits your diet/allergies/political sensitivities
  • No need to pay for watered down drinks in awkward to hold glasses
  • No need to pay for a cab
  • No need to regret spending $30 on the WORST MOVIE EVER

… and by doing absolutely nothing, you can actually HELP SOMEONE ELSE.

Here’s how…

Stay In and Help (website coming soon) asks you to calculate the average $$ you spent on all the Saturdays you went out in the last three months.  That figure might be .50 cents, it might be $5 bucks,  it might be $50… heck,  it might even be $200 or more (I know some of you are still rolling deep, even in this economy.)

Got your average?

Okay.

On, and leading up to March 7th, we’re going to ask you to contribute that average to Social Media For Social Change’s City Harvest Initiative (event coming up April 3rd!)   — and then spend the night hanging out with us!

Let’s Party

We’re going to be hosting a giant Twitter party with Ustreams and livecasts from special guests, surprises, and insanity for everyone to join in, worldwide.

And you don’t have to get a new dress or get your roots done or get a haircut or find some clean jeans to wear. You just stay home, make your contribution, and get in on the fun.

We’ll be creating a wiki page where you can put up your own Twitter handle so everyone knows that you are part of the party — and then they can follow you as part of the great Stay In and Help Us Party!

You can even host a PJ party or a potluck at your house in your city (or a BBQ if you live in Austin — ha!) — as long as everyone is at SOMEONE’S home… stayin’ home.

Get creative… and then add it to the wiki as soon as it’s up. Take pictures. Take videos. Livestream. Whatever way you can to get involved. It’s the first party of it’s kind, so have fun with it!

And if you’re not able to make a contribution, you’re still welcome to join in and take part in the party. Just make sure to retweet it and let everyone in your community know about this fantastic cause and this great opportunity.

Odds are, if you have internet access to take part, you’re doing at least a little better than the families that City Harvest supports — and even if you only have only  a little to give, we (and they) appreciate every single penny.

Let’s use these tools — and our sweatpants and bowls of chips and wireless — to make a difference MARCH 7th, 2009!

Donate Now, Too

You don’t have to wait until March 7th to make a difference! We’re taking donations online right now to benefit City Harvest. 50 cents, $1, $5, $10 – whatever you can give will go to help New York’s hungry! PLEASE DONATE NOW.

AND THANK YOU!

  2. this is such a wicked idea. i was thinking of having a music party anyway (people bring instruments and playing together)… now it is going to be extra special.

  3. Great idea, Meg. We are indeed organizing a potluck for a close (non-social media) friend of mine. I’ll ask them to contribute to your cause.

  4. I have two shows, this Saturday night. Maybe I can wear pajamas to the 10PM show, and stream the video or audio live. Eh?

  5. We’d love that, Jonathan! Just email me the link you’d expect to use, and we’ll link it up!
